A Call For Change: Collaborating to
end food insecurity in Ontario
The Current Crisis
Poverty rates in Canada have been rising over the last few years. These are very serious social issues that we cannot neglect and which can only be solved through collaboration with all stakeholders.
-
1 in 4 children go to school on an empty stomach in Ontario.
-
About 6.9 million people in the ten provinces lived in a food-insecure household in Canada.
-
Over 2.8 million people in Ontario are food insecure.
-
Over 700,000 people in Toronto are experiencing food insecurity daily.
Massive Scale Food Distribution
In 2022-2023 received and distributed over 1.6 million pounds of food to approximately 4000 persons on a weekly basis. This achievement showcases our capacity to mobilize and manage large-scale logistics to serve those in need. This resulted in the provision of over 500,000 meals annually. This remarkable number reflects our commitment to ensuring that individuals and families facing food insecurity have access to nutritious meals all year round.

Regional Expansion
of Services
Freedom City's commitment to fighting food insecurity extends beyond metropolitan areas, presently reaching communities in Oshawa, London and Bancroft with plans to expand our services to other low income, high poverty areas including Hamilton, Windsor and Thunder Bay. This extension of our services ensures that essential food distribution and resources are available province-wide, particularly in regions that might otherwise be underserved. Our initiatives are carefully tailored to meet the unique needs of each community, showcasing our adaptability and dedication to a comprehensive approach in addressing hunger throughout Ontario.

Our Solution
Freedom City has launched the Zero Hunger Initiative to tackle the escalating issue of food insecurity in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. This significant endeavor seeks to partner with businesses, organizations, government agencies, and network partners to significantly reduce food insecurity in the GTA. This involves engaging more local and regional food suppliers, strengthening relationships with regional food distributors, enhancing logistics, food storage and distribution capabilities, to manage a larger influx of donations efficiently.
In 2023 we provided food for over 4000 persons on a weekly basis. This year, we aim to provide weekly food assistance to 20,000 individuals, a target that underscores our dedication and the critical need for intervention in our communities. With an expanded network and reinforced partnerships, the Zero Hunger Initiative is on track to significantly alter the food security landscape, ensuring more families and individuals have access to essential nutrition.

Our goal is to serve 20,000 people weekly, 80,000 people per month.

Warehousing Facility
The key to expanding the Zero Hunger Initiative
A warehouse will greatly increase Freedom City's capacity, allowing us to:
-
Store more food and improve logistics for better distribution across Ontario.
-
This facility will enhance our resource intake, strengthen partnerships, and demonstrate our ability to handle large-scale operations.
-
It will also improve resource management, reduce waste, and create more volunteer opportunities.
These improvements are essential for expanding our reach, combating hunger, and sustaining our efforts in the region. Your help in acquiring a warehouse will impact communities across Ontario and Beyond.
Vehicle
Freedom City is growing quickly and so in order for us to pick up and deliver more food we are presently in need two additional vehicles (a truck and a van) for Freedom City to significantly enhance our reach and efficiency, allowing us to serve more communities across Ontario with increased delivery frequency and volume. This support will reduce operational costs, improve response times in emergencies, and bolster our logistics, ensuring timely distribution of resources. Furthermore, it offers sponsors high visibility and positive PR through branded vehicles, fulfilling corporate social responsibility goals while making a tangible difference in the lives of Ontario residents. Join us in driving change and expanding our impact.
Operating Cost
Operating Freedom City requires substantial resources to maintain our high standards of service and impact. This includes vehicle fuel and maintenance, staffing, program costs and food purchases. Sponsors' contributions help cover these critical costs, ensuring our vehicles are always road-ready and our operations run smoothly. By supporting our operating costs, sponsors enable us to focus on our mission of delivering food and essential resources to those in need, maximizing our outreach and effectiveness across Ontario. Your support ensures that every dollar goes further in making a real difference in our communities.
